Samuel Ravengai

Samuel Ravengai is an Associate Professor in Theatre and Performance at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), where he also serves as the Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies for the Faculty of Humanities. A Zimbabwean-born scholar and director, he is internationally recognized for propounding Afroscenology, a groundbreaking theoretical framework dedicated to the decolonization of African theatre aesthetics and performer training. His extensive academic career includes serving as the Head of Department at the Wits School of Arts and as the editor of the South African Theatre Journal. With a PhD from the University of Cape Town, his prolific research output includes influential titles such as Decolonising African Theatre (2024) and Theatre from Rhodesia to Zimbabwe (2021), cementing his role as a leading voice in post-colonial performance studies.
